Abstract
The workshop involved development of a research program in the La Plata Basin and Central Brazil that aimed to: provide scientific knowledge in support of decision making; use opportunities provided by developments in agricultural commodity and biofuel markets; and determine the regional differentiation of associated risks and vulnerabilities based on infrastructure endowment, natural resource quality, and climate. South America is experiencing land-use conversions from pasture lands and natural vegetation to arable agriculture at an unprecedented rate and scale. This is driven by demand for biofuels that comply with climate change conventions. However, affected regions contain fragile and species-rich ecosystems.
