Abstract
The incentives researchers face do not encourage research for development, as they prefer participation in global networks rather than focusing on local problems. IDRC seeks to establish to what extent research councils in developing countries might support activities that are intended to benefit poor women and men, and what opportunities exist for IDRC to further its mandate by partnering with these councils, with a focus on science and technology for the poor. Different sets of skills, and an understanding of how potential solutions might be put into practice, is often needed to convert research into usable ‘goods’.
