Abstract
This paper contributes to the environmental scan that informs the IDRC Corporate Strategy (2010-2015). Telephonic and email interviews and short discussions were conducted with staff of the World Bank, Ford Foundation, Google Foundation, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Sida and Acumen Fund. Desk research covered journals, book and web sources. Funders that promote development research need to know what they are achieving and use measurement and evaluation methods to determine this. As a donor, IDRC promotes development research utilizing public funds, and is part of a wider community of donor organizations, bilateral and multilateral, as well influential philanthropic organizations.
