Abstract
This evaluation study makes an important link between the successes of IDRC projects and their understanding of the environment within which the research is contextualized. Further, it highlights the importance of external factors to the success of research for development. In some cases where IDRC could not continue the work, local NGOs have come forward to take up the responsibilities in an ongoing basis. From its inception, IDRC has sought to support research that can be applied to increase productivity in traditional, highly complex, and culturally integrated production systems that have evolved in the context of mountain environments.
