Abstract
The choice and handling of development-oriented research demands an understanding of problems from multiple and often conflicting interests and perspectives. The seven countries covered by this study are postcolonial societies; political turmoil and instability have characterized the post-WWII political histories of Tanzania and Uganda in Africa; Bangladesh, India and Vietnam in Asia; and Bolivia and Nicaragua in Latin America. The study provides a broad understanding of how development research can be adaptable to context (demand-driven, location-specific and multidisciplinary research). For the programmes analysed, donor control as well as research autonomy is manifested at different levels.
