Localization

Africa is home to thousands of indigenous languages, reflecting the diverse cultural make-up of the continent. Africans who are forced to study in a second (usually colonial) language often face an additional set of learning challenges. Adapting software to local African languages can offer more effective learning opportunities for Africa and help to protect fragile cultural heritages.

The term “localization” refers not only to the translation of software user interfaces and of content into a given language but also to the adaptation of content and applications to cultural and social contexts. Localization of ICTs and of content and services is a key issue in order to ensure the appropriation of ICTs by African users at the individuals and organizational level.

ACACIA will continue to support work in this areas to:

• make a difference by offering real solutions to specific problems in accessing ICTs and information; and
• develop evidence on what localization possibilities are feasible and on the benefits of ICT support of African languages.

Localisation

L’Afrique compte des milliers de langues autochtones, qui reflètent la diversité culturelle du continent. Les Africains qui doivent étudier dans une langue seconde (habituellement une langue coloniale) sont souvent aux prises avec des défis d’apprentissage additionnels. L’adaptation des logiciels aux langues africaines peut permettre un apprentissage plus efficace pour les Africains et contribuer à protéger un patrimoine culturel fragile.

Le terme « localisation » désigne, en plus de la traduction de l’interface des logiciels et des contenus dans une langue donnée, l’adaptation des contenus et des applications aux contextes culturels et sociaux. La localisation des TIC, des contenus et des services est un enjeu capital pour que les utilisateurs africains puissent s’approprier les TIC, à l’échelle individuelle ou organisationnelle.

ACACIA a réalisé certains investissements dans la recherche sur la localisation, et le programme continuera d’appuyer les travaux dans ce domaine afin de :

• offrir des solutions concrètes à des problèmes précis concernant l’accès aux TIC et à l’information et
• de documenter ce qui est ou non réalisable en localisation ainsi que les avantages de l’adaptation des TIC aux langues africaines.
