Abstract
For a while now competition agencies have successfully defended their independence from a number of perceived threats. In the last twelve months, however, politicians on both sides of the Atlantic have taken decisive steps over mergers and acquisitions, in particular those involving foreign firms. Does this represent the beginnings of a return to a more politicised merger review regime? Moreover, what do these developments imply for the modus operandi of competition agencies? This paper explores these questions and examines some of their future potential implications.
