Implementation of INFORMAS in Latin America : measuring and benchmarking food environments and policies to effectively reduce obesity and non-communicable diseases.
(National Institute of Public Health (INSP), Mexico; and Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology (INTA), University of Chile, Santiago, Chile, 2018-12) Barquera, Simón; Corvalán, Camila; Reyes, Marcela; Tolentino, Lizbeth
The international network INFORMAS developed a monitoring framework called the Healthy Food Environment Policy Index (Food-EPI), to assess the extent of implementation of government policies and actions for creating healthy food environments, compared to international best practices. This study was carried out in Chile and Mexico, two Latin American countries undergoing similar demographic, epidemiologic and nutrition transitions with particular differences in obesity and diet-related non-communicable disease (NCD) burdens. The INFORMAS instruments for the Food-Epi module were translated and adapted to the context of each participating country. The study provides a methodology that can be extended to other countries.

Transforming gender and food security in the global South
(IDRC, Ottawa, ON, CA, 2016) Njuki, Jemimah; Parkins, John; Kaler, Amy
The first section of this book focuses on the Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index (WEAI) and its adaptations for different projects and contexts. The second section moves from measurement to empowerment; gender roles and relations exist within a broader social and cultural context. Part III of the book focuses on how gender interacts within this broad context, and the implications for food security. The final part of the book focuses on approaches to transforming gender relations. This book makes the case that gender equality and the empowerment of women must be central to any efforts to improve agricultural productivity, and food and nutrition security.

African urban harvest : agriculture in the cities of Cameroon, Kenya and Uganda
(IDRC, Ottawa, ON, CA, 2010) Prain, Gordon; Karanja, Nancy; See-Smith, Diana
The book’s focus is the role of urban agriculture, and opportunities for making locally produced food more available and more profitable. Book chapters reflect on the policy and governance implications of greater integration of urban natural resources and the built environment, an expanded role for urban agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa, and the crucial role of women in urban food systems. Through research conducted in Cameroon, Kenya and Uganda, the authors detail the dynamics of urban and peri-urban agriculture through three complementary lenses: livelihoods, health, and policies/institutions. In-depth case studies of multi-disciplinary and multi-agency platforms in Kampala and Nairobi point to ways forward.

Seeds and synergies : innovating rural development in China
(IDRC, Ottawa, ON, CA, 2010) Yiching, Song; Vernooy, Ronnie
The Center for Chinese Agricultural Policy (CCAP) participatory plant breeding initiative in Guangxi is highlighted in this book. The book argues that a cooperative and complementary relationship between poor farmers and their ways of organizing the key features of rural life is urgently needed. Improved farmer organization could address the challenges of food security, well-being, sustainable natural resource management and biodiversity conservation. The book explores the potentials of existing plant varieties and the operational context of local farmer participation and farmer interactions with state-sponsored research and extension for achieving rural empowerment.

Greywater use in the Middle East : technical, social, economic and policy issues
(IDRC, Ottawa, ON, CA, 2010) McIlwaine, Stephen; Redwood, Mark
This book outlines the use of greywater (GW) to mitigate some of the burden of poverty especially where there is little or no connection to the main sewerage or water provision networks. The book discusses details of three separate GW pilot schemes in Jordan and Palestine. Technical details of the treatment units are provided, along with performance evaluations. GW use and the training and awareness associated with it should become part of a wider approach to water conservation and governance in general. GW pilot schemes need to recognize contexts where deprived households may seek individual advantages above social and community obligations.

    Success stories in Asian aquaculture
(IDRC, Ottawa, ON, CA, 2009) De Silva, Sena S.; Davy, F. Brian
This book captures the trends and lessons-learned that have driven the evolution of Asian aquaculture, augmented with comparable cases of small-scale fisheries. Cases were chosen to reflect activities that have impacted livelihoods of different socioeconomic groups and that have strongly contributed to aquaculture sustainability. Asian aquaculture is a small-scale farming activity, where most practices are family-owned, managed, and operated. It accounts for more than 85% of global production. The stories presented in “Success Stories in Asian Aquaculture” reflect its unique nature, providing insight into how and why it has become successful.

Agriculture in urban planning : generating livelihoods and food security
(IDRC, Ottawa, ON, CA, 2009) Redwood, Mark
This book presents urban agriculture (UA) as crucial to food security. Urban food security is related to increasing people’s access to food, increasing its affordability, and improving marketing and health-related practices to ensure that food is safe. By encouraging vegetables and nutritious foods are grown locally where they are consumed, and preserving employment for those involved in production and transportation, UA eliminates costly and inefficient transportation from rural areas. The case studies illustrate how urban farmers provide a service to the urban economy in terms of food production, as well as mitigating some of the negative impacts of waste.
