Abstract
Initiatives for setting eco-labelling schemes in OECD countries are examined as well as the design of environmental management standards by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 14000 series). The first initiative is unilateral, while the second is multilateral. Both standard-setting processes offer the prospect of new business opportunities for developing countries' exports, through the marketing of "environmentally friendly products" (EFPs).
