Abstract
The paper provides background and benefits of mangrove forest ecosystems as the wetland bridge between land and marine ecosystems. It focuses on mangrove restoration projects and their implementation process. A Mangrove Ecosystem Information Service (METS), established in Chennai is one of the components of a global network of Mangrove Genetic Resources Conservation (MGRCC) strategy. This programme protects coastal farm families from the hazards in sea level rise caused by global warming. The mangroves of Pichavaram, Tamil Nadu, sustain women fishers and fishermen. They and other rural folk have benefited from the activities of M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) in co-operation with the Forest Department and other stakeholders.
