Abstract
This study examines food security and effects of intensified dairying in a peri-urban area of Addis Ababa, (Ethiopia) where a market-oriented dairy production (MODP) system was introduced for smallholders. It evaluates the effects of MODP technologies and identifies policy options that would enhance beneficial impacts while mitigating harmful outcomes of the new technologies. The marketed surplus analysis indicates that households with cross-bred cows (CBC) were much more involved in the commercial economy than those with locally bred cattle. For study households, there were significant differences in levels of income, food purchases, calorie intake and food marketed surpluses between the two groups.
