Abstract
Through on-the-ground examples, the article advances the argument for institutionalizing participatory research methodologies. The African Highlands Initiative (AHI) builds competencies of researchers and others through training courses, mentoring, exchange visits, peer review, and applying participatory research methodologies (PRM). In most agricultural research organisations, professional rewards and advancement are based on crop variety development and scientific papers. There are no extrinsic rewards for using PRM; for incorporating important social and institutional dimensions into one’s work; or being responsive to clients’ priorities and needs. Capacity building and reformed reward structures can help foster institutional change to support inclusion.
