Abstract

Telecentres provide one response to prevailing conditions of uneven and unequal access to information and communication technologies in rural and remote areas. Co-published by IDRC and Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA), this volume "The Experience with Community Telecentres" (2003) presents results from studies conducted in Mali, Mozambique, Senegal, South Africa and Uganda that examine the setting, operations and effects of community telecentres. National research teams adapted centrally developed instruments for local use addressing four issues: access; relevance; sustainability; and environments (technological, social, economic, and political). Recommendations are drawn from each of these areas.
