Abstract
The article explains how Bob Geldof's “Live 8” appeal fits into the “dependency syndrome” which Africa itself has moved beyond. Live 8 was a string of benefit concerts that took place in July 2005, in the G-8 states and in South Africa, parallel to the G-8 Summit where industrialized nations and invited African leaders spent a day discussing issues of Africa. The article argues that African leaders should be buttressed by solid governance institutions, forgiven of debt acquired years ago during the Cold War, freed of tied aid, and given a level playing field in global trade.
