Abstract
In many regions of Latin America access to the Internet is not available, even for the ones who can pay for it. The paper explores current options (2005) for cell phone and internet connectivity, including an example of the impact of a combined Satellite and Wi-Fi system in El-Chaco in Ecuador – with just three initial connection points the impact could be felt immediately. Wi-Fi in combination with VSAT technology can be a cost-effective way to connect rural communities. As one local woman expressed it: “I feel like El Chaco is for the first time on the map.”
