Abstract

The aim was to consult with experts to identify critical gender effects and gaps in research and development regarding new biotechnologies in terms of social and gender relations; women's food production and natural resources-based enterprises; labour patterns; biodiversity; access and benefit sharing; and poverty reduction in the developing world. A series of key issues were identified by participants. Asia-Pacific participants agreed that priority areas include access to education on biotechnology, bioethics and health, and the commercialisation of biotechnology by women scientists and entrepreneurs. In Africa, there was a particular focus on agricultural technologies and GMOs.
