Abstract

Using Nakasongola District as a case study, the paper investigates changes in the natural environment in the semi-arid areas of Uganda and resultant gender resource management regimes, livelihood systems and social relations. It documents changes that have taken place in the natural resource base, emphasizing indicators of environmental change, causes and effects. Findings present local communities' diverse adaptive strategies; the dynamics of resource struggles in the context of resource scarcity; and gendered and class manifestations. The findings reflect struggles and dilemmas faced by people living in any fragile and water stressed eco-regions.
