Abstract

The dynamics between humans and fisheries resources within a larger ecological community are explored in this paper. Seagrass beds play a fundamental role in the maintenance of exploited fisheries resources by providing critical nursery and feeding habitats, refuge from predators, and organic matter, while contributing to nutrient recycling and secondary production including fished species. Increases in human populations have caused significant nutrient loading in nearshore ecosystems. As part of the seagrass community ecology, Queen conch represents a significant source of income to thousands of fishers in the Caribbean, and are intimately linked to the state of seagrass communities.
