Abstract
This document provides an abbreviated version of a situational analysis of the complex of socio-cultural, economic, political, environmental and institutional issues that contribute to the degradation of the natural resource base of the highlands of East and Central Africa (ECA) where the African Highlands Initiative (AHI) has been targeting its research since 1995. It provides a review that highlights constraints and opportunities related to the poverty-degradation nexus in this intensively cultivated ecoregion, as well as various approaches used in Integrated Natural Resource Management (INRM), underscoring their strengths and weaknesses.
