Abstract
“Swayamsiddha” began in June 2000 to improve rural women’s and girls’ health, and empower them to address their own needs by initiating gender-responsive collective actions and institutionalising processes in 10 selected project areas. The evaluation team led focus groups and interviews with project participants, including men. The detailed report concludes that self-help groups (SHGs) resulted in women and men valuing knowledge as an asset, while introducing further research questions. Women's needs are often side-lined due to gender norms, access to, and control over resources.
