Abstract

The paper discusses experiences of the African Highlands Initiative (AHI) by alluding to factors that have impeded institutionalization of Participatory Research Methodologies (PRM) in national agricultural research organizations (NARO) and in institutions of higher learning. Many projects have failed using conventional approaches due to community exploitation and fatigue, lack of local ownership of the process, and inability of outsiders to understand local social and ecological systems. The paper proposes methods for building competencies of scientists in action learning, systemic reflection and participatory teaming culture. PRM is key to fostering innovation in Natural Resources Management and improvement of livelihoods.
