Abstract
A number of corporations sit on Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) advisory committees that aggressively campaign via free trade agreements (FTAs) for market access in the goods and service sectors, adoption of stringent intellectual property rights (TRIPS-Plus), and trade facilitation and investor-state dispute settlement procedures, irrespective of benefits to developing countries, making a mockery of negotiations at the multilateral forum of the World Trade Organization. The article reviews some of these activities and their effects on world trade. It is unsurprising to find issues and standards that fail to be adopted at the WTO now being incorporated regardless into FTAs.
