Potency and efficacy of essential oils from selected aromatic crop species commercially grown in Uganda : a review of their use in animal and human therapeutics
    (2022-06) Tugume, P.; Kamatenesi-Mugisha M.; Bazirake, G. B.; Noah, W.; Asiimwe , S.
There is increased use of essential oils from aromatic crops in the beverage pharmaceuticals, apiary and cosmetics industries in addition to aromatherapy due to production of active compounds. Essential oils have been proven to have bactericidal, virucidal, fungicidal, anti-parasitic and insecticidal effects. The aim of this review was to provide an overview of efficacy and potency of essential oils from selected aromatic crop species commercially produced in Uganda. We reviewed relevant articles, books, theses, dissertations, patents, and other English only reports using potency, traditional medicinal uses, pharmacological or biological activity, toxicity, phytochemistry, and efficacy of Cymbopogon citratus, Salvia rosmarinus, Eucalyptus citriodora and Lavandula anguistifolia as the key search terms. We searched databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Science Direct and search engines such as Google Scholar between June and November 2021. The essential oils were reported to have antibacterial, antifungal, anticancer, anthelmintic, insecticidal, larvicidal, acaricidal and antioxidant effects. Additionally, rosemary oil inhibited aflatoxin growth and secretion, stimulated the nervous system and stabilized mayonnaise during storage. The biological activities exhibited by essential oils in this review validate their current and potential use in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries.

Does forestry have a role in poverty reduction?
    (2007-09) Hobley, Mary
The paper analyzes critical factors that shape the potential for pro-poor policy, including an analysis of the nature and understanding of poverty to ensure clarity in debate. It unpacks the assumptions underpinning much of the support to “pro-poor” forestry, and then develops an approach that includes examining the nature of the state and its structures, civil and political society, and some overarching trends that enable or disable pro-poor policy. Forest resources directly contribute to the livelihoods of 90% of the 1.2 billion people living in extreme poverty and indirectly support the natural environment that is essential for agriculture and food.

Emerging donors in international development assistance : the China case
(IDRC / Partnership & Business Development Dviision, 2007-12) Chin, Gregory T.; Frolic, Michael B.
This report begins by highlighting the evolution of China’s foreign aid programming. In many respects, current programs stem from the “Eight Principles for China’s Aid to Third World Countries” announced by former Premier Zhou Enlai in 1964. Chinese authorities have tended to focus on projects that achieve maximum impact both in terms of development and foreign policy.

Integración de inmigrantes CentroAmericanos en Belice
    (2000-09) Salazar, Ana

Strengthening climate change adaptation research : mobilizing and enabling international research partnerships
    (IDRC, Ottawa, ON, 2007-02) IDRC
The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) convened this meeting to explore ways to mobilize and organize international research partnerships involving Canadian researchers and funding partners. Presentations of both regional and thematic perspectives were followed by discussion of research priorities and the elements and modalities that would constitute effective research partnerships. Participants agreed that there is a range of activities where collaboration between researchers from Canada and developing countries will bring mutual benefits and could facilitate progress to solve some of the most urgent problems that people from the South and the North are facing now as a consequence of changes in the climate. General consensus was that multidisciplinary, action research was a prerequisite to success. This research will be far from easy; it will indeed be scientifically challenging. Canadian researchers have much to gain from interaction with Southern researchers, who have, in many cases, made advances in methodological approaches to this type of research. Important for success are mechanisms to engage Canadian and Southern scientists in discussions of areas of interest and to facilitate funding collaboration among Canada’s major grant-making institutions. Young researchers and students are key resources and will play central roles in the process.
