Yaara hone? : building collective responsibility for maternal safety : gender and health equity project : series on decoding maternal safety
    (2015) Iyer, Aditi; Mathrani, Vinalini
“Yaara Hone” means “who is responsible?” Maternal safety in gender-adverse contexts is seriously compromised by a refusal among healthcare providers, communities and families to recognize or acknowledge women’s health needs. There is little sense of individual or shared responsibility in these conditions. This kit outlines several strategies to breach social hierarchies, traditions and configurations of power that may be sensitive according to community circumstances. Local conditions are important considerations. Yet, maternal safety can be assured relatively easily by every society with the available obstetric knowledge and technology.

Priorities for research on equity and health : towards an equity-focused health research agenda
(PLoS Medicine, 2011-11-01) Östlin, Piroska; Schrecker, Ted; Sadana, Ritu; Bonnefoy, Josiane; Gilson, Lucy; Hertzman, Clyde; Kelly, Michael P.; Kjellstrom, Tord; Labonté, Ronald; Lundberg, Olle; Muntaner, Carles; Popay, Jennie; Sen, Gita; Vaghri, Ziba
Based on a report by the Commission on Social Determinants of Health (CSDH) the article recommends an agenda for research on health equity organized around four distinct yet interrelated areas: 1) Global Factors and Processes That Affect Health Equity; 2) Structures and Processes that Differentially Affect People’s Chances to Be Healthy; 3) Health Services and Health System Factors that Influence Health Equity; 4) From ‘‘Problem Space’’ to ‘‘Solution Space’’: Effective Policy Interventions to Reduce Health Inequity. Especially important are efforts to build research partnerships with UN and development agencies, along with researchers and organizations in low- and middle-income countries.

Identifying and assessing maternal risks : a handbook for healthcare providers
(Gender and Health Equity Project, Centre for Public Policy, Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, 2015-01) Iyer, Aditi; V., Srinidhi; Sreevathsa, Anuradha
This handbook on maternal risks draws from research and activities of the Gender and Health Equity (GHE) project including its pregnancy tracking system and helpline in Koppal district (India). Findings showed that health personnel in Primary and Community Health Centres ignore or downplay obvious indications of risk. The project developed strategies to improve collective responsibility for maternal safety, and to strengthen access to health services. The handbook is based on work with pregnant women, their families, communities and healthcare providers. Maternal safety can be assured quite easily by every society with the available obstetric knowledge and technology, yet social and health system factors may still serve as barriers.

Programmatic strategies for tackling maternal anaemia : lessons from research and experience
(2012-04) Virani, Altaf; Krishnan, Suneeta; Iyer, Aditi; Patel, Priya; Shankar, Mridula; Reddy, Bhavya
Maternal anaemia is associated with a higher risk of maternal mortality and poor perinatal outcomes. Even mild and moderate iron deficiency anaemia can undermine cardiovascular functioning and thereby put at risk both wellbeing and survival. This brief provides: background to the increasing rates of anaemia in Karnataka/Bangalore districts; outlines the barriers to effective prevention and treatment; suggests effective solutions including improving outreach and effectiveness; and makes nine recommendations. The “knowledge-implementation” project brief is intended to clearly spell out the implications of research and put forth specific recommendations for programming and policy.

Unfree markets : socially embedded informal health providers in northern Karnataka, India
(Elsevier, 2013-01) George, Asha; Iyer, Aditi
The paper contributes to emergent literature on the institutional context of informal health service provision, which is relevant to policy discourse in India, health system reform, and to marginalised populations the world over. Universal health care is premised on the participation of adequate numbers of skilled health providers who operate within a unifying regulatory framework. However, many providers (known as RMPs) who work in marginalised regions lack government-recognised medical degrees. This research details their social profile, including how practice is embedded in and regulated by relations with formal health systems, markets and communities in which they work and live.

Integración de inmigrantes CentroAmericanos en Belice
    (2000-09) Salazar, Ana
