Abstract
The World Health Organization estimates that there are 100 million cases of
clinical malaria in Africa every year while visceral leishmaniasis (also known
as kala-azar) is reported in 47 countries with approximately 200 million people
at risk and 100,000 cases annually. Both diseases are endemic in Kenya and
cause high levels of morbidity and mortality. In 1989 for example, malaria accounted
for 20 percent of outpatient morbidity in government health facilities.
The existence of both diseases is complicated by inadequate health resources.
