Abstract
Aquaculture has been identified _as a technology which contributes to rural
development through improved nutrition, employment creation, and the
use of otherwise underutilised resources. A review of the literature and of
experiences in rural aquaculture demonstrates, however, a weakness in the
evaluation of decision-making criteria in regards to the adoption of the
technology.
The framework suggested characterises the complex relationship between the
technology source and recipient. This relationship defines the effectiveness
of technology transfer of aquaculture projects in rural artisanal fishing
communities.
This research demonstrates that technology transfer of aquaculture is more
than a matter of biophysical and economic factors. Its adoption is directly tied
to the community perception of the potential benefits, previous contacts of
this community with outside intervention, and the quality of the
relationship between the source institution and the community recipient.
