Item Open Access Appendix E to final technical report : emerging african leaders programme alumni survey results(2018) Camerer, MarianneAlmost 100% of the respondents have stayed in contact with other participants from the Emerging Africa Leaders Programme with the majority (49.7%) connected with 1-5 people from their cohort; 33% with 6-10 people; and 22% with more than 10 people from their cohort. Themes addressed by the programme are African Economic Integration, Accountability and Inclusivity, and Youth Inclusivity in Africa. Part of the GSDPP is the Building Bridges programme which brings together emerging leaders from all over Africa towards promoting and building ethical public leadership, while establishing new networks of expertise and trust. This brochure presents the organizational profile and pillars of the intensive leadership residency programme. Inclusive development requires strong public leadership but in many instances in African countries, this is hampered by elite capture, corruption, and a lack of public accountability.Item Open Access Democracy in Central and Southern Africa : the road ahead, 4-5 September 2019 conference programme(2019) Camerer, MarianneThe aim of the conference was to take stock of democratic development in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region; identify key obstacles and drivers of democratisation in the region through panel discussions; and to equip democratic forces with ideas and tools to reinforce and/or deepen democracy in their respective countries. This document provides an introduction to the conference, the agenda, and speaker biographies. The SADC Treaty (1992) commits its member states to act in accordance with the principles of ‘human rights, democracy and the rule of law.’ Only one country in the SADC region (Mauritius) is considered a “full democracy.”Item Open Access IDRC and UCT GSDPP Building Bridges programme : regional workshop on youth inclusion in governance and accountability processes Nairobi, Kenya 28-29 November 2017(2017) Camerer, MarianneThis report provides a summary of key themes which emerged during the Regional Workshop on youth inclusion, and begins the reflective process towards a detailed report. A focus for reflection is “Translating Policy to Practice: Moving Beyond Shop-talk to Action: Examples of Inclusive and Youth-Driven Processes at Local, National and Regional Levels.” The report urges consideration of the potential of individuals to act as change makers. The definition of “youth” is discussed. Feedback from the Emerging African Leaders Programme (EALP) participants is provided in this report. This policy brief provides biographies of participants, and enlarges on the activities of EALP and the Nelson Mandela School. It provides a recently published LinkedIn Mandela School Alumni page so that connections between participants can be better maintained. Existing policy frameworks which address youth (un) employment 2. The role of the informal sector in creating work opportunities 3. The labour market and youth: Demography, skills versus market needs 4. The entrepreneurship debate 5. The impact and opportunities of the 4th Industrial Revolution.
