Papers were presented by participating countries on problems associated with aridity, crop production, marketing, processing, and consumption, with a view to developing a systematic approach to food utilization. Research has been focused on increasing the production and utilization of crops grown in the semi-arid regions to achieve self-sufficiency and improve the nutritional status of the population. Education and production planning are necessary to modify food consumption patterns. Much of the food production, marketing, and processing in Africa is done by women on a small scale. Modernization of these systems is desirable and inevitable but consideration must be given to the social and nutritional implications of these changes. Additional agricultural and credit facilities should be extended to women to encourage their enterprises. Participants called for the preparation of a catalog on the use of various crops for the benefit of researchers. Recommendations were made for further research on problems of food processing, and the development of a methodology to identify consumer food preferences.Item Open Access Aquaculture in Southeast Asia(IDRC, Ottawa, ON, CA, 1973) IDRCA seminar held in Malacca to review the status of aquaculture in some Southeast Asian countries was attended by 33 participants from 12 countries. Various problem areas were outlined in a comprehensive coverage of those which most significantly inhibited the more rapid development of aquaculture as a means for greater food supply and more profitable enterprise. Areas such as fish seed supplies, feeds and stocking systems, as well as diseases, pesticides, pollution, and other technical economic and social problems were discussed. Certain specific cultures, e.g. shrimp, freshwater prawns (specifically Macrobrachium), aquarium fish, molluscs, and others of high cash value, offer promising prospects; others (including some shrimp and fish species) require intensified research to supplement current national and regional activities. Projects were formulated on the following: induced breeding and seed supply of important carps; intensive catfish culture; Chanos culture optimization; bivalve research development; and profitability of aquaculture systems.Item Open Access Science of the culture of freshwater fish species in China(IDRC, Ottawa, ON, CA, 1973) China.
